our academic year
We follow the academic calendar set by the Open Latch Education Foundation.

The school year always starts on 21 August and end on 20 August of the next year.

A "term" is any period of 2 weeks or more that official instruction takes place. A "quarter" and a "session" are types of terms.

There are 4 quarters of 8 work weeks each, and a summer session that can be anywhere from 2 to 4 work weeks. The first 2 quarters correspond roughly to the traditional college Fall semester, and the second 2 quarters to the traditional Spring semester.
The 4 quarters and the summer session give us an academic year a total of 5 terms.

There are multiple breaks throughout the calendar year, during which the students are to rest. There is a 1-week break after quarter 1, a 1-week break after quarter 2, a 2-week break after quarter three (corresponding the the traditional Spring break), and a 3-week break between the fourth quarter and the summer session.

Quarter 2 has breaks within its 8 work weeks for Thanksgiving (1-week break) and Christmas (2-week break).
